a t l a n t i s (pool #2)
This piece is a kiddie pool casting in Forton plastic. The pool appears to be floating, but is resting on a chunk of white marble. It is altered by pigment and paint treatments, cracked “artifact” edges, and a dye job done with Blue Frost Gatorade. Horses inspired by, but not diligently copied from, the Lascaux caves face off against reliefs of seahorses. As simulacra of cavernous magic, the painted horses convey a 'themed' or 'recreated' space. Taupe, cartoonish fish, facing away from both land and sea-horses further confuse the timeline of the pool. Perhaps a future Sapien, noting both the still-preserved caves of Lascaux and the decomposition of our our plastic playthings, would be driven to assemble this mutant.
The install shots are, respectively, from the shows "Cornucopia/Urn" in Philadelphia, and "Water Index" in N.Y.C.
materials:
Forton plastic, burlap, pigment, Gatorade, marble
process:
A thick Forton casting, strenghtened by burlap, was made from two kiddie pools (found molds). Forton dye was added in the process, while additional color elements were added once the piece was set.
